Bristol RE ECG112K at Southsea
This RELL is probably the only survivor of the 12 REs operated by Provincial - although one of the earlier batch was reported abandoned somewhere in the USA a few years ago. This vehicle, from the second batch, was a diverted order from Northern General, and therefore has features distinguishing them from the earlier vehicles (themselves diverted from Hants & Dorset) - the most notable is the large single piece destination window, which just fits in the space above the windscreen.
The Gosport and Fareham company was once a part of the larger ‘Provincial’ empire, with operations at various locations in the UK. By the end of the 1960s, the Hoeford, Fareham, based operation was the only survivor, and it was sold to the NBC in 1969. As a former tramway operator, it was a ‘statutory company’ and retained its name and image, although administered as part of Hants & Dorset. In subsequent years, its current owner, First, does not seem bound by those facts to retain a separate identity!
